Congratulazioni Italy!
The location for the 2026 Winter Olympics has been announced with joint-hosts Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo being picked to host the sporting event.
The International Olympic Committee voted to accept the joint bid by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo over Swedish runner-up, Stockholm.
“We can look forward to outstanding and sustainable Olympic Winter Games in a traditional winter sports country,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement. “The passion and knowledge of Italian fans, together with experienced venue operators, will create the perfect atmosphere for the best athletes in the world.”
Milan, renowned for being the fashion capital of Italy, will join forces with the ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo for the winter sporting event, which will run from February 6, 2026, through February 22, 2026. According to The Telegraph, the opening ceremony will take place in Milan, with the closing ceremony taking place in Verona.
This will mark Italy’s third time hosting the Winter Olympics and the second time Cortina d’Ampezzo has hosted. The northern Italian ski resort first hosted in 1956. More recently the Italian city of Torino hosted the sporting event in 2006.
“Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo combine the advantages of a big European city and those of a popular mountain resort region in the Italian Alps,” the IOC revealed of their choice.
