U.S. tourists are being urged to avoid travel to Mexico for both health and safety reasons.

According to USA Today, both the State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued travel warnings for Mexico due to “very high levels of COVID.”

However, that isn’t the only reason for the warning.

USA Today reports that U.S. consular authorities in the country issued a warning for Americans to be careful when traveling to several of Mexico’s top tourist destinations after two Canadians were killed at an upscale resort in Playa del Carmen on January 21.

“In light of recent security incidents and criminal activity in popular tourist destinations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, U.S. citizens are reminded to exercise increased caution when traveling to the state of Quintana Roo,” The U.S. Consulate General Merida wrote in a travel alert shared by USA Today. “Criminal activity and violence may occur throughout the state, including areas frequented by U.S. citizen visitors.”

Mexico has also recorded a record-high number of new COVID-19 cases, prompting the CDC to move the country from a Level 3 to the “very high risk” Level 4 category.

According to Travel+Leisure, Mexico – which was named Travel+Leisure’s 2022 Destination of the Year – does not require US tourists to quarantine or get tested for COVID-19 prior to their trip.
