California Bans Travel-Sized Plastic Toiletry Bottles in Hotels

If one of the perks of staying in a hotel means nabbing as many travel-sized plastic shampoo and lotions as possible to add to your stash, you will soon be out of luck – if you’re vacationing in California.

The west coast state has become the first state in the U.S. to ban travel-size toiletry bottles in an effort to reduce the number of plastic containers being thrown away by hotel guests.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill, which will go into effect in 2023. The ban will apply to lodging establishments with more than 50 rooms. Hotels will less than 50 rooms will have to stop using miniature bottles by 2024.

According to CNN, New York may be following suit with New York Senator Todd Kaminsky sponsoring a bill to prohibit travel-size plastic bottles in hotels.

“Little everyday actions, like eliminating small plastic bottles, will have a positive impact on our environment,” Kaminsky said in a press release, reported by CNN. “By barring hotels from giving single-use plastic toiletries to customers, we are safeguarding our environment, and mitigating plastic waste and waterway pollution.
