Cannabis Travel Among Top Travel Trends for 2023

HotelPlanner, a hotel booking engine and travel technology platform, has announced the top travel trends for 2023, and it’s all about booking that much-longed-for adventure to a dream resort or bucket-list destination.

“Today’s travelers want to make special memories with friends and family, while others want their social media to reflect how adventurous they are, says Philip Ballard, Chief Communications Officer, HotelPlanner, in a statement reported by Business Wire. “Others long for remote locations with no crowds and privacy, and are willing to pay for it. And millions of others are traveling on business with their families in tow to extend the trip into a mini-vacation. We would summarize all these trends as ‘purpose-driven travel.’”
“‘Purpose-driven’ travel trends reflect the pent-up demand for epic “Insta-worthy” adventure for which travelers are willing to pay a premium; more culturally immersive and experiential travel with friends and family; and extended stays that mix business and leisure travel,” HotelPlanner shared in a press release.

The Top 10 Travel Trends for 2023, according to HotelPlanner, are:

Exchange Rate Travel – in 2023, savvy travelers will pick their location based on the most advantageous exchange rate. The weakened British pound and Euro have made it financially feasible for Americans to travel across Europe. According to HotelPlanner, the same goes for the Japanese yen, which hasn’t been this weak against the US dollar since 1990.

Luxury Travel – according to HotelPlanner, luxury travel may be the biggest to emerge from the pandemic. Travelers who have the means are now looking for more tailored, upscale experiences. Whether that is chartering a private plane or yacht, staying at an exclusive all-inclusive resort, or taking that African dream safari, luxury travel will be a massive trend in 2023.

Wedding Travel – after many couples were forced to put their destination wedding dreams on hold during the pandemic, wedding travel will return with a vengeance next year, with the Caribbean and Hawaii being popular picks.

Digital Nomads – according to HotelPlanner, hotels are already spending millions to market directly to remote workers whose employers allow them to work wherever they want, and the trend is set to continue in 2023. Favoring Airbnb or extended stay hotels, digital nomads are people who may visit several different cities or countries during the year.

Bleisure Travel – “This is a combination of business & leisure travel where a typical employee is on a business trip from Monday – Thursday, and then extends their trip for a mini-vacation, oftentimes with their spouse or family in tow,” HotelPlanner revealed in a statement reported by Business Wire. “Given that corporate travel is still recovering, customers should take advantage of the ‘Saturday Night Stayover’ deal where many airlines and hotels will offer discounts if you extend through the weekend.”

Sustainable Travel – as travelers become more environmentally conscious about the carbon footprint of their travels and the effects on the planet, sustainable travel will continue to be a trend in 2023. According to HotelPlanner, travelers seek out more “Eco-Friendly” hotels and transportation options and combine their vacations with philanthropic events.

Multi-Generational Travel – HotelPlanner is seeing an increase in trips with multi-generational families traveling together. As more families realize grandparents won’t be around forever, they’re more likely to include them on family vacations.

Heritage Travel – thanks to the popularity of genealogy sites such as Ancestry.com, HotelPlanner reports travelers in 2023 will be eager to travel to their ancestor’s country of origin. “This has led to an increase in heritage travel, where families are traveling all over the world to visit the hometown of their great-great-great grandparents,” HotelPlanner reveals.

Cannabis Tourism – “With dozens of U.S. states now offering various forms of legal marijuana, this has created a whole new market of travelers who are visiting states where cannabis is much easier to obtain legally than wherever they reside,” HotelPlanner said of the new travel trend. “This is no longer just trips to ‘hash bars’ in Amsterdam. There are now hotels in Denver specifically marketing to “420 friendly” travelers, and not just on April 20th, but year-round.”
