CDC to Keep Cruise Restrictions in Place Until November 1

Marking yet another blow for the embattled cruise industry, the Centers for Disease Control have announced they will keep cruise restrictions in place until November 1, 2021.

According to several media outlets, the announcement came just hours after a trade group representing the cruise industry asked the CDC to lift its “framework for conditional sailing order” to allow for a phased resumption of cruises from U.S. ports beginning in July.
“The outdated CSO, which was issued almost five months ago, does not reflect the industry’s proven advancements and success operating in other parts of the world, nor the advent of vaccines, and unfairly treats cruises differently,” said Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association, which represents 95% of ocean-going cruise capacity, said in a statement.

“Cruise lines should be treated the same as other travel, tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors,” Craighead said in a statement.

The CDC has cited on its website that cruise passengers are “at increased risk of person-to-person spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and outbreaks of COVID-19 have been reported on cruise ships.”
