Cruise Line Vows to Power Ships with Dead Fish

In effort to become more eco-conscious cruise line Hurtigruten have revealed they plan to power 6 of their 17 ships using emission-free liquefied biogas – a type of fuel made from dead fish and other organic waste.
Hurtigruten, who are known for their spectacular cruises around the Norwegian Fjords and the Arctic, have already banned single use plastics onboard their ships and plan to implement the new fuel by 2021. Hurtigruten will use biogas in conjunction with large battery packs and liquified natural gas.

“While competitors are running on cheap, polluting heavy fuel oil, our ships will literally be powered by nature,” Hurtigruten’s CEO Daniel Skjeldam said in a statement. “Biogas is the greenest fuel in shipping and will be a huge advantage to the environment. We would love other cruise companies to follow.”

“This is just the beginning,” Skjeldam said. “Sustainability will be a key driver for the new era of shipping and the travel industry. Hurtigruten’s unmatched investments in green technology and innovation set a new standard for the whole industry to follow. Our ultimate goal is to operate our ships completely emission-free.”
