Germany Cancels its Famous Nuremberg Christmas Market

One of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets – and a huge draw for tourists each festive season – has been canceled due to COVID-19.

Nuremberg’s famous Christkindlesmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest running markets and draws approximately two million visitors annually, however, due to rising COVID-19 cases in the city the market will not go ahead as planned this year.
“This decision is not easy for us,” Nuremberg mayor Marcus König said in a statement. “The Christmas market with its great tradition belongs to Nuremberg. Nevertheless, we cannot justify an additional gathering of many thousands of people in the city center.”

The market has records dating back to the 1600s, making it one of Germany’s oldest markets. According to Lonely Planet, for the four weeks of Advent, the city’s main market square is transformed into a Christkindlemarkt replete with cozy and festive goodies.

This marks the first time since World War II the market has been canceled when it was put on pause until 1948.
