Although Hawaii started welcoming back tourists to its gorgeous islands earlier this month, it’s not quite ready to welcome cruise ships back to its ports.

According to Travel+Leisure, the state doesn’t plan on allowing cruise ships back to the islands until January 2022 at the earliest.

“Currently, the earliest resumption of cruises to Hawaii would be January of 2022,” Jai Cunningham, the public information officer for the Hawaii Department of Transportation, said in a statement to CruiseCritic. “While no firm date is currently set, HDOT, in coordination with the various State, Federal, and Local entities, is focused on the safest possible resumption of cruises.”

Hawaii currently operates a ‘Safe Travels’ program, which allows tourists to skip quarantine if they can show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. According to Travel+Leisure, Cunningham told CruiseCritic, the ‘Safe Travels’ program would need to be extended to those arriving by cruise ship once the ports open.
