How To Be A Polite Traveler

The United Nations wants travelers to be in the know on travel etiquette, which is why they have launched a new manual on how to be a well-behaved visitor.

The Travel. Enjoy. Respect handbook is part of a global public awareness program from the United Nations World Tourism Organization, which seeks to enlighten tourists on how to travel responsibly.
The launch of the manual is in response to anti-tourism protests in Italy and Spain over the summer stemming from unsustainable visitor numbers and badly behaved tourists making life difficult for full-time residents.

UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, said in a statement, “Whenever you travel, wherever you travel, remember to respect nature, respect culture, and respect your host.”

“You can be the change you want to see in the world. You can be an ambassador for a better future.”
The manual will be published in different languages and available in various outlets across the globe.

Some of the etiquette tips include learning to speak a few words of the local language, respecting local laws, avoid giving money to begging children, purchasing locally made goods and avoid purchasing counterfeit merchandise, respect wildlife and the natural habitat, and researching your destination and their local customs.
