Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano has erupted for the first time since 1984.

Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, began erupting on Sunday evening on the Big Island of Hawaii.
“At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities,” the U.S. Geological Survey said as it raised the alert level for the volcano from “advisory” to “warning.”

However, the USGS warned residents that “based on past events, the early stages of a Mauna Loa eruption can be very dynamic and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly.” For that reason, the USGS is urging residents who are at risk to “review preparedness and refer to Hawai’i County Civil Defense information for further guidance. “

Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984 when lava flows came within 4.5 miles of the island’s biggest town, Hilo.
