Thanks to a fee hike, passport applicants will soon be paying an extra $20 for their passport books.

According to an announcement from the State Department, the fee for a passport book will increase on December 27.
“The increased fee is necessary to ensure we continue to produce one of the most secure travel and identity documents in the world,” the State Dept. shared via Twitter.

Prices for passport books vary by age. Currently, first-time passport book applicants aged 16 and over, pay $145 in fees. That price will increase to $165 on December 27. Travelers aged 16 and over who are renewing their passport books will see their fees rise from $110 to $130 – and travelers renewing their passports who are under the age of 16 will need to fork out $135 in fees beginning next week.
