Travelers hoping to snap a selfie, or even sit on Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps could now be slapped with a hefty fine.

Police officers in Rome are cracking down on an ordinance passed a few months ago prohibiting eating, drinking or sitting on the UNESCO- protected steps.
Italians and tourists can now be fined up to the equivalent of 450 U.S. Dollars – and the same ordinance applies to other famed Roman attractions including the Trevi Fountain.

“You need to set rules to reduce the risk of people being disrespectful to the city of Rome. So many things are so old and so ancient,” Simone Amorico, CEO of Access Italy, a private tour operator, told the Washington Post. “Walking in Rome is like walking in a museum. Things go back 2,000 years old. You can walk from one part of the city to the other and pass the most important monuments and venues there are in history.”
