TSA Extends Airport & Plane Mask Mandate Through September

The Transportation Security Administration has extended the mask mandate for airports, planes, trains, and buses through September 13 – and those found violating the mandate could face penalties of up to $1,500.

According to People, the original mask mandate was meant to expire on May 11, however, the TSA noted, “masks remain an important tool” in defeating the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The federal mask requirement throughout the transportation system seeks to minimize the spread of COVID-19 on public transportation,” Darby LaJoye, the senior official performing the duties of the TSA administrator, said in a statement reported by People.

“Right now, about half of all adults have at least one vaccination shot and masks remain an important tool in defeating this pandemic,” LaJoye said. “We will continue to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to evaluate the need for these directives and recognize the significant level of compliance thus far.”

Children under two years old and those with disabilities will still be exempt from the mask mandate.
