TSA Introduces Facial Recognition at Select US Airports

The TSA is testing facial recognition tech at select US airports as part of a pilot project.
According to USA Today, the technology is currently in 16 airports nationwide, including Baltimore, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando.
At the airport, travelers can insert their driver’s license into a card reader or hold their passport photo against it. After that, they need to look at a camera on a screen similar in size to an iPad. This camera captures their image and compares it with the ID they presented earlier. This ensures the person in the ID matches the person at the airport and the ID is legitimate. A TSA officer supervises the entire screening process.
“What we are trying to do with this is aid the officers to actually determine that you are who you say who you are,” said Jason Lim, identity management capabilities manager, in a statement reported by USA Today.
According to the TSA, the pilot is voluntary and accurate. USA Today reports a small sign will alert travelers that their photo will be taken as part of the pilot and that they can opt-out if they like. It also includes a QR code for them to get further information about the pilot program.
