U.S. State Department Warns Travelers of Kidnapping Risk in Mexico

The US State Department has warned Americans not to travel to several states in Mexico.

An updated travel advisory from the State Department has warned of increased violent crime, including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery. It warns US citizens to “exercise increased caution” when traveling to Coahuila and Nayarit states and “not travel” to Zacatecas.

The US State Department also issued updated information on the “kidnapping risk” for the Mexican states of Colima, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Baja California, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Sonora, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Quintana Roo and San Luis Potosi.

“U.S. citizens are advised to adhere to restrictions on U.S. government employee travel,” the travel advisory warns, which includes not traveling alone, sticking to major highways, avoiding hailing taxis from the streets and instead using rideshare apps such as Uber or using taxis from regulated taxi stands.

Guanajuato state due to crime and kidnapping.
Jalisco state due to crime and kidnapping.
Morelos state due to crime.
Sonora state due to crime and kidnapping.
