Mayor Urges Visitors to Steer Clear of Salem This Halloween

If a trip to spooky Salem, the town famous for its 1692 witch trials, is on your bucket list this Halloween, the city’s mayor is asking you to please stay away!

Salem, Massachusetts normally draws thousands of visitors each October, thanks to a myriad of witchy events the city holds. However, like most things this Halloween, COVID-19 is putting a dampener on the ghoulish festivities.
“If you’re not in Salem yet and are thinking about coming, my advice to you is skip it,” Mayor Kim Driscoll said during a press conference. “Skip it until after October.”

Despite event cancellations, Salem is still seeing an influx of visitors – and those packed streets carry the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

“It’s not going to be a banner year given all the things that were canceled,” the mayor said. “We’re working hard to cut down on visitors. That is normally not what we do in October, but this is no ordinary October.”
