How does watching 60 films in complete isolation holed up in a lighthouse on a remote Swedish island sound?
If it sounds like a dream come true, you may be just the person Sweden’s famous Göteborg Film Festival is looking for!
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Göteborg Film Festival is going to look a little different. Instead of the massive crowds the festival normally draws, the 2021 event will be anything but conventional.
“No crowds, no parties, no sold-out cinemas,” the film festival revealed. “This year’s festival focus, Social Distances, explores the new world that has emerged in the wake of the pandemic. What does film mean to us when we are isolated from everything else? To investigate, we are opening a brand-new cinema. In the middle of the ocean.”
Göteborg Film Festival is, instead, looking for one film buff who isn’t afraid of watching movies in complete isolation.
The intrepid winner will be transported by boat to the remote Swedish island of Pater Noster where they will be given supplies to stay in the former lighthouse keeper’s home, including food and all the films from the festival – but there’s a catch!
The solitary film enthusiast will “experience total isolation from the rest of the world. No phone, no family, no friends. Just you, the sea and the festival’s film programme with 60 film premieres. For seven days,” the film festival revealed on their website.
“We are interested in how the audience’s relationship to films changes under those circumstances, and wanted to explore this relationship by taking it to the extreme — isolating one person on a small rock in the sea for one week with films as the only company,” Jonas Holmberg, artistic director of the film festival told CNN.
Applications are open now through January 17, 2021, and the experience will take place between January 30 and February 6, 2021.
