The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix over the weekend helped Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas break its passenger record on Monday.
The airport said it saw 43,177 departing passengers on Monday, smashing the record of 35,357 set just a week before, after the Austin City Limits music festival.
Austin-Bergstrom, which opened in 1999, was only designed to handle a little over 30,000 passengers per day.
A major expansion project is underway at the airport, with a plan to add 20 gates, doubling passenger capacity.
Jennifer Williams, the Planning and Development Project Management Supervisor, said the expansion will include more TSA lanes and ticket counters, and a new midfield concourse.
