A passenger was caught trying to bring a “homemade firearm” and a hatchet on board a flight out of Portland International Jetport in Portland, Maine, last week, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
Photos shared by TSA New England show the alleged homemade firearm, a metal cone with another metal piece affixed, and a small hatchet with the handle wrapped in cordage. Both items were discovered in the passengers carry-on bag on Dec. 14.
Portland Police responded and confiscated the firearm, according to TSA New England spokesman Dan Velez. The hatchet is permitted in checked luggage.
Velez said this was the third firearm found at the Portland Jetport this year. Nationwide in 2022, the TSA said it has detected a record 6,301 firearms as of Dec. 16, and more than 88% of them were loaded.
