Mount Kilimanjaro Now Has WiFi Access!

Hikers and mountain climbers traversing Africa’s highest peak will now be able to communicate with friends at home via WiFi.

According to CBS News, Mount Kilimanjaro – the world’s largest free-standing mountain – has a new broadband network that will enable climbers to access WiFi internet.
Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano peaking at 5,895 meters above sea level. According to NPR, an estimated 35,000 people attempt to summit Kilimanjaro each year, but approximately a third are forced to turn back due to altitude sickness and other issues. It is hoped the new coverage will support tourism as well as safety.

NPR reports the state-owned Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation installed the broadband network last week at an altitude of 12,200 feet and aims to bring connectivity to the summit of Kilimanjaro by the end of the year.
