Peru Closes Machu Picchu to Visitors

Travelers to Peru will be unable to visit the country’s iconic Machu Picchu after the government decided to close the landmark indefinitely due to civil unrest in the country.

According to Travel Awaits, Peru is experiencing violent demonstrations by protestors demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte. The protests began last month after then-President Pedro Castillo, Peru’s first leader with a rural Andean background, was impeached and imprisoned for trying to dissolve congress.

So far, more than 50 people have died during the unrest, and 417 visitors, 300 of them foreigners, were stuck at Machu Picchu, unable to get out. The visitors to the site have since been safely evacuated.

To protect the safety of tourists and the population in general, the government has closed Machu Picchu until further notice.

“In view of the current social situation in which our region and country are immersed, the closure of the Inca trail network and Machu Picchu has been ordered.”
