American Airlines Announces Ban on Emotional Support Animals

Following Alaska Airlines’ decision to ban emotional support animals from flights, American Airlines will roll out a new policy on Monday regarding animals onboard flights.

Beginning next week American Airlines will ban emotional support animals and only allow animals in the cabin free of charge if they are trained service dogs.

According to USA Today, American said passengers with a service dog will need to complete a government form stating the dog’s health, training, and temperament.

Non-trained service dogs will only be able to fly in the cargo hold, or a kennel that fits under the seat in the cabin and will be subject to a pet fee ranging from $125 upwards, USA Today reports.

The new ruling goes into effect on Monday, however, passengers with an existing ticket may fly with a companion animal through February 1, 2021.
