Greece, a country renowned for its idyllic landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, has long been a favored destination for tourists from across the globe. However, the nation’s tourism industry is currently facing one of its most significant challenges as wildfires continue to wreak havoc across various regions due to this summer’s unprecedented heatwave.
As the wildfires continue to spread, some of the country’s most popular tourist destinations have been reduced to charred ruins, and many travelers are canceling or postponing their plans to visit Greece.
According to numerous media outlets, tourists have been fleeing from the Greek island of Rhodes as flames overtook the island, leaving many stranded at the airport as they wait for flights. Approximately 19,000 people have been evacuated from Rhodes, with The Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection calling it “the largest evacuation from a wildfire in the country.”
Air quality concerns in affected regions have also directly impacted outdoor activities such as hiking, sightseeing, and water sports in other areas.
According to Politico, the Greek foreign ministry has set up a helpdesk to help depart visitors who have lost travel documents, in cooperation with embassies, as some were left only with their bathing suits.
