Player Hermosa has been named Central America’s first World Surfing Reserve in a massive win for Costa Rican surfers.

The area contains numerous world-class surf spots, and Playa Hermosa (located in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas province) is also home to over 61 threatened species and the Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge.
According to Surfline, the area was dedicated as the 12th World Surfing Reserve – a designation that will “provide an environmental back brace for a range of issues affecting the Costa Rican surf community.”

“Playa Hermosa is a perfect example of our World Surfing Reserve program,” said Nik Strong-Cvetich, CEO of Save The Waves Coalition, in a statement reported by Surfline. “The local leadership and on-the-ground efforts of our Coalition partners to preserve their surf ecosystem is inspirational for other communities looking to protect their surfing resources nationally and globally.”
According to The Inertia, Playa Hermosa now joins 11 other World Surfing Reserves, including:

Malibu, California
Ericeira, Portugal
Manly Beach, Australia
Santa Cruz, California
Huanchaco, Peru
Bahia Todos Santos, Baja California, Mexico
Punta de Lobos, Chile
Gold Coast, Australia
Guarda do Embau, Brazil
Noosa Heads, Australia.

The next global location to join the World Surfing Reserve will be Devon, United Kingdom.
