With the promise of a vaccine on the horizon, travelers are once again looking to pack their bags and head off for a well-deserved vacation – but what if you’re traveling now? Should you quarantine? And, if so, for how long?
The Centers for Disease Control have updated their recommendations concerning travel – and while they stop short of using the word “quarantine” they do recommend staying home for one week after arrival.
“Air travel requires spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people and frequently touched surfaces,” the CDC noted on its website. “Social distancing is difficult in busy airports and on crowded flights, and sitting within 6 feet of others, sometimes for hours, may increase your risk of getting COVID-19.”
“Testing before and after travel can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Testing does not eliminate all risk, but when paired with a period of staying at home and everyday precautions like wearing masks and social distancing, it can make travel safer by reducing spread on planes, in airports, and at destinations,” the CDC advises.
New recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control for travelers includes getting a COVID test 1-3 days before travel and getting tested 3-5 days after travel. In addition, the CDC recommends travelers stay home for 7 days after travel, even if they test negative for COVID-19.
If travelers don’t want to get tested upon returning home, the CDC says it’s safest to stay home for 14 days after travel.
Regardless of where you traveled or what you did during your trip, the CDC recommends taking the following precautions to protect others from getting COVID-19:
