Visitors to the incredibly popular tourist mecca of Venice, Italy, will soon have to pay an entrance fee to enjoys its famous canals.
As USA Today reports, the entrance fee will start in the spring of 2024, with city officials committing to a “30-day experiment” of charging visitors to the city 5 euros.
The entrance fee will apply to visitors over the age of 14 who are visiting on peak days and not staying the night. Locals, commuters, and those with second homes are among some of the groups exempt from the entrance fee. According to USA Today, the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, said that while the entrance fee is necessary to regulate tourist flows on busy days, it does not mean Venice is closed to tourists.
