The United Nations have just released their World Happiness Report for 2017 listing the happiest places to live and once again the Nordic nations have come out on top.

Norway displaced Denmark for the number one spot this year in the report produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which ranks 155 countries.

The rankings are based on six factors – freedom, generosity, social support, absence of government corruption, per capita gross domestic product and healthy life expectancy.

“Happy countries are the ones that have a healthy balance of prosperity, as conventionally measured, and social capital, meaning a high degree of trust in a society, low inequality and confidence in government,” SDSN director Jeffrey Sachs said in an interview.

Not surprisingly war-torn Syria, along with Yemen were ranked as unhappy – with South Sudan, Liberia, Guinea, Togo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Central African Republic finding themselves at the bottom of the list.

The United States dropped one place on the unhappiness scale, coming in at number 14 this year – but still apparently happier than Germany (16), the United Kingdom (19) and France at 31.

So if travel to happy countries is top of your list, you may want to book a trip to one of the following top ten happy countries, which are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden.
