Online Passport Renewal to Start in Early 2023

The U.S. State Department is making it much easier to renew your passport by unveiling a new online renewal option

Following a successful trial, the U.S. State Department says it plans to launch its online passport renewal option in early 2023.
According to the New York Times, the online renewal option was created following a December 2021 executive order from President Biden, who requested the federal government “design and deliver services in a manner that people of all abilities can navigate.”

To qualify for online renewal, you must currently have a passport that is or was valid for ten years (even if the passport has recently expired). According to the New York Times, you can’t renew documents online that are too new or too old, so if you have more than one year left on your passport before it expires, you can’t renew online. Expired passports issued more than 15 years ago cannot be renewed online; the same goes for lost or stolen passports.

You must also be 25 years of age or older and must not be changing your name or gender on the document. You must also be able to upload a digital passport photograph, live in the United States, and be able to pay via credit, debit, or ACH payment.
